Rolling along with the Apartment404 Sports Machine...

Someone's gotta do it.

-----------------------------------

-- Now THAT's a fair contract.
Wells is a twenty eight year old centerfielder with proven All Star talent, reputed to have a great work ethic and attitude, with a collection of all around skills that should not fade too badly when the wheels inevitably go (power, solid defense, arm, basically just a terrific hitter). Vernon Wells is the type of player that may "earn" that kind of insane money, though you wonder how the Blue Jays and their largely apathetic fan base will remain competitive in the bear that is the AL East. When the Jays are good, the SkyDome (yeah...SkyDome) is filled and electric. When they're bad or just not good, it's a tomb. Can they bring in enough cash to justify this deal? Who knows.

-- It might have been called the "Slinky Bowl" if not for this man and his daughter.

--Auburn is one HELLLL of a fine damn university.
Thanks to The New York Times, Auburn athletes will now be required to attend minimum one class session per semester in order that professors watching the Game of the Week will now be able to possibly recognize the Athlete/Scholar of the Week. Simply incredible. Thanks to the paper of record for a hilarious and telling story.

-- You know, she's right.
Troy Smith vs Michael Vick? We know who we'd bet on. Vick got hurt in college. Vick gets hurt with the Falcons. Smith has won big at Ohio State, and can win big in the pros. Memories of poor Charlie Ward wasting his quarterback skills playing 15 minutes a night for the Knicks, among teams, should make NFL scouts say to themselves, "This guy's freakin' good. Everything else is hype." Bet on Smith being a terrific pro in the right situation (good luck, Matt Leinart...).

-- "(We're) too nostalgic, (We'll) admit." - Max/Chris Eigeman in the just released DVD of "Kicking and "Screaming".

The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics represented one of the high points in American sport because....
(1) The plethora of great athletes appearing at these, the most memorable of Olympics for us, was caused, in part, by the Jimmy Carter boycott of the Moscow Games of 1980. A lot of the competitors from the '80 team wanted to get some, and were forced to wait just a bit for their just rewards.
(2) The track and field events were populated with a lot of historically great performers who had no option but to continue practicing their craft, with zero chance for the big bucks of a professional tour. Edwin Moses, Evelyn Ashford, and Daley Thompson are just three veterans who won gold at the apex of their athletic careers.
(3) Carl goddamn Lewis, who took the second week's events at the Coliseum by the throat. His three individual golds, in the 100m, 200m and long jump are going to be remembered long after anything he may have done later to reduce his public image. The man was great.
(4) Late night volleyball, at least on the East coast. A lot of folks were glued to their sets watching Kiraly, Timmons, and the late Flo Hyman. We remain blown away by their athleticism, spirit, and spunk. The men won gold and the women silver. Great stuff.
(5) Jordan became Jordan at these Games.
During an exhibition game leading up to LA, we remember some very prominent NBA player who, while being interviewed as he sat down for a minute towards end of the game, practically shouting, "..then some guy comes flying over my head!" Or something like that. That man was MJ, who dominated the tryouts, the exhibitions with the pros, and certainly the actual competition, where Bobby Knight guided the Jordan, Mullin, Perkins, Ewing, Tisdale, and certainly Steve Alford dominated squad to blowouts in each and every game.
(6) Mary Lou.
'Nuff said. You had to be there.
(7) Greg Louganis winning the hearts of America while dominating his sport like few other athletes ever have.
(8) The very first women's marathon. Yes, the chicks did not die off or collapse at the 18 mile mark or so. They kicked ass, with Maine's own Joan Benoit crushing a great field with an unforgettable race, victory lap, and medal ceremony. She made history that day, twenty two years back.
(9) Amazing moments -- Holyfield destroying some guy, then getting robbed. "I'm a happy dude!" Al Trautwig doing terrific work on sports we'd never seen before. He made those weird pseudo sports eminently fascinating. The lovely, fragile twig that was Zola Budd being brutalized by the press and getting entangled with Decker. Rafer Johnson lighting the torch. The sunsets of LA.
