"Amreeka" - Yes, Foreign Films Can Be Crap Too

Ever hear someone say, "I love foreign films!"

What a joke. Just because a movie has subtitles doesn't mean it can't be poorly executed.

I watched about half of a recent release called "Amreeka", about a Palestinian mother and teenage son's arrival in Illinois shortly after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, and could go no further. Every single American, as portrayed in the film, was a racist, hateful pig except for one pot smoking teenage boy. I decided after about forty five minutes that this hateful film would not be offering any insight into the human experience and stopped the Netflix feed. What a disappointment.

The New York Times, among others, gave "Amreeka" a very big thumbs up. For what? Every single adult character in the film was either dumb, self centered, or mean. Why watch a film about stupid, selfish people? I watch movies to be moved, to see something beautiful and/or insightful, not to see ignorant and racist people doing awful things.

The next time some poseur tells you about their love of films with subtitles clue them in to "Amreeka."
