Theo: 2006...Not so good.
The trade for Doug Mirabelli with the Padres, with the Sox giving up two prospects they had run out of patience with, is turning out to be one of the most lopsided in all of MLB for 2006.
Josh Bard and Cla Meredith are having All-Rookie caliber seasons, although not enough ABs or IP's for either to make a truly fair assessment.
---------------
Anibel Sanchez AND Hanley Ramirez for Josh Beckett and Mike (The $8 Million Dollar Man) Lowell? Wow.
Sanchez has a 3.22 ERA in a bunch of innings. Hanley? Might be ROY in the NL. Wow.
I won't beat a dead horse by linking Beckett and even Lowell's stats AND salaries versus the two very very good rookies. No...I won't do that.
--------------
It is a bit unfair to look back at deals that apparently make sense to BOTH teams when consummated. The Red Sox wanted a stud in Beckett and were willing to accept Lowell's salary. Well, Lowell has been a decent but maybe slightly below average 3B overall and Beckett hasn't even been league average in ERA or other numbers. He has been healthy, though, which coming into the year was the big question mark. Now.....there are plenty of other question marks about the Game Six Hero.
Bard's AND Meredith's confidence were low when traded. I'm sure that Theo knew he was giving up WAAAYYYY too much for the not even mediocre Mirabelli, but pulled the trigger anyway. And it's now biting him in the butt in a big way. Meredith appears to be back to his AA form: basically a very good to excellent reliever. And Bard looks like a first string catcher, which the Sox, could....ah....use right about now. All hindsight is 20-20 though, admittedly.
I won't even go into the Marte for Crisp deal. Wow (again). Is Boston that tough a team to play for, what with the media attention and fans like me slobbering for news and gossip?
But DAMN MAN, they gave up four guys who are playing great for......what? For what?
Wily Mo for the beloved Bronson Arroyo looks like the only deal that may conceivably work out. Again, 20-20 hindsight, but a couple of real lopsided deals have taken the shine off of Theo. And the minors are bare, IMO. Nothing left to deal right now. They're all starring for other teams (tear shed right here in Apartment404).

Edit: The horror...the horror.
