A return to "The Beautiful Game"?: Celtics in Transition

Ok.

That's it.

We're through with Coach Doc Rivers.

=================================

The loss to the Raptors tonight, 106-102, when (1) Scalabrine played 17 minutes in place of productive C's such as Gomes and Perkins, (2) Rajon Rondo, the C's only defense against TJ Ford, played 2 minutes, and (3) when Rivers went with the same Brian goddamn Scalabrine against the monster that is Chris Bosh for key stretches in the fourth quarter (Scalabrine left when the score was 103-97), is the final straw.

It seemed to us until this season that Rivers had taken a lot of unfair criticism, what with deluded (new) Garden fans screaming for his firing while the players being counted on to play can't seem to.....play.

----------------------------------------

But no more.

We are now in agreement with the Garden faithful. Coach Doc is holding back the largely youthful Celtics, if not absolutely killing them.

When ("Bad Contract") Brian Scalabrine is getting quality minutes in place of Ryan Gomes, who was playing a terrific game as usual, ya gotta look at the coach. And when Rivers called (finally!) a timeout with a minute left in the first half to yell at the players on the court ("You guys better hustle or so help me!!"), the lightbulb went off.

For good.

-----------------------------------

We, the dwellers of Apartment 404, have decided that the only hope for a resurrected season and a potential return to the glory days is the hiring of Pistons assistant and former Hornets and Warriors head coach, Big Red. Number 18 up in the rafters.

The one and only Dave Cowens, who played on some of the great Celtics teams, remains one of the most unique centers in league history, and proved his worth as a head man in his time in Charlotte when he coached some terrific and very entertaining Hornet teams to solid records and the playoffs, should be hired ASAP by Wyc. Y.

Cowens is 58, which might tax his energy reserves, but if anyone has reserves of energy, it's David Cowens.

--------------------------------------

As for the current team.....

What has happened to Telfair's drive and dish move that flashed for a moment or two early in the year? It has disappeared, as has his entire presence, if he ever had an NBA caliber game. Wally is a sieve who loves to shoot, no matter the circumstances, plain and simple. His game is catch and shoot, period. Anything else is a reach. Don't doubt his defensive ability? See Parker, Anthony in tonight's Raptors game. And Delonte is a terrific third guard, but certainly no point.

Where's Rondo?

Where's Rondo?

Where was Perkins?

We know where Scalabrine was: giving up points and fouls to Chris Bosh in the latter stages of the fourth quarter, when the game was decided. Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable.

----------------------------------------

We simply do not understand how the rook Rondo can sit on the bench when Delonte and the overmatched, unproductive Telfair squander opportunities right and left against points both good and bad (see Ford and Calderon). What the hell is going on? First Tubby Smith, who clearly can coach, gives up on Rondo. Now Doc, who has not proven a thing as far as coaching ability, benches the massively talented kid. Is he a complete jerk? Has he a string of robberies that have yet to hit the media? What gives? Why do coaches, both proven and not, give up on one of the most gifted young guards in America?

----------------------------------------

Not that the current Celtics are a threat to the Mavs and Spurs of The League, but it would be nice to see this team make some measurable progress. And that means winning more than 40 games in 2006-07.

We don't see that happening with Rivers making coaching decisions.
