Ballpark Playlist

The ever-awesome Sports Illustrated staff this week came up with their list of best 40 sports songs. Their list included a number of extremely obscure tunes, which is cool with me, but it got me to thinking about what I would play if I was in charge of tunes for tonight's Sea Dogs game. I admit: I like popular music. So this list contains no "hidden gems", a la SI's "Who Killed Davey Moore?" by Bob Dylan. (When SI made up a list of the best sports books ever two years back, they chose as #1 a book that wasn't even in print at the time. Posers (ha!).

===========

"I Will Follow" - U2 - I have no idea why this song never caught on at sporting events. It gets my psyched every time I hear it.

"Start Me Up" - The Rolling Stones - One of the granddaddy of all sporting anthems.

"Billie Jean" - Michael Jackson - Yes, he was pretty messed up. But only a few people know what went on in his bedroom, and they aren't talking. Anyway, he's dead, and it's time to celebrate his music. How can you not want to move with the first notes of this classic?

"All Along The Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix - I always thought this would make a good at bat song for a baseball player. Just the first couple of notes.

"Born To Be Bad" - George Thorogood and the Destroyers - From "Bull Durham"s bar scene, early on, where Nuke is dancing with several babes.

"Fortunate Son" - CCR - A rock and roll classic. Unmistakable.

"Surfin' USA" - The Beach Boys - One of the most iconic songs ever recorded. Yeah, I know there's no real surfing on the East Coast. It's still a cool, historic song.

"Can't You See (Live)" - Marshall Tucker Bank - One of my favorite live songs. Great all the way through.

"The Edge of Glory" - Lady Gaga - She keeps putting out the hits. Don't bet against her, long term.

"867-5309 / Jenny" - Tommy Tutone - One of the great 80s one hit wonders, and one of my favorite songs. I have heard it hundreds of times and still love it.

"This Is Country Music" - Brad Paisley - Off the new album. A gentle ballad worth a listen.

"A Country Boy Can Survive" - Hank Williams' Jr. - Legendary country rocker.

"Gone, Gone, Gone" - Colin Ferrell - I didn't know he could sing. Good song.

"The Man Comes Around" - Johnny Cash - A bit more uplifting than the rest of the album this song comes from. His voice got better as he aged.

"Never Say Never" - Justin Bieber - I skip the end, where Will Smith's kid takes over (can't stand that money grabbing Smith family).

"Can't Take My Eyes Off You" - Franki Valli and The Four Seasons - What "Sweet Caroline" is to Fenway, I believe this song could be to other ballparks. Reminds me of "The Deer Hunter."

"Our Lips Are Sealed" - The Go-Go's - They rock all the way through this classic.

"Jump Around" - House of Pain - My alma mater plays this at home hockey games, and it gets the crowd pumped!
