Watching the second episode of ABC's sensational new series "U--y Betty" (Yes, I hate the title. Derogatory and untrue about most anyone. So I'm just not gonna type it.) got me to thinking about the nature of beauty, especially youthful beauty. So many people feel that because they happen to be in their twenties and attractive that the world is theirs and always will be. The petty, gorgeous but bomb throwing assistant at "Mode" is a terrific example (yes, I know it's a tv show).
But I've got news for ya, kids. Everybody gets old(er). No matter how many heads you turn today and even tomorrow, there will come a day when you no longer are the hot young babe/stud that gets what you want because you want it, and that's enough of a reason. And most likely you will be angry. At what, you won't be sure, but you'll complain about the unfairness of the world, how rotten your kids are to you and that your spouse doesn't respect you, blah blah blah.
Life is unfair? This is something us less attractive people figured out around puberty.

Bullies: Young and Old.
There is a stereotype about the high school experience that goes something like this: If you absolutely luuuuuved it, you're a jerk and will probably never grow up. If you were miserable or at least not thrilled with the whole deal, then there's hope for you (later on in life). At least I think that is the way it goes. If not....sue me. Because I have lived this particular stereotype: was miserable in high school but feel like things are turning out OK (Wow...did I just type that? Shit, must be the Cymbalta talking).
So many of these school age bullies, to use a tired axiom, really are just afraid. And you don't have to be a big strong male to be a bully. Just someone who uses power (physical, emotional, sexual, etc.) to get what you want and deprive others of what they need or deserve. What are all these jocks/beauty queens/"trenchcoat mafia"/nerds/pick a group afraid of? Not really sure, since humans are so complex, but I do know that fear may be the most base emotion, and the undercurrrent of so much of what we do with the 16 or so waking hours we have every day. One bully I know of wasn't young, and wasn't physically attractive but was very good at what he did: tearing people apart for profit. His name was Albert Goldman, and he was famous back in the 1980's for writing scathing, unsubstantiated biographies about celebrities. Goldman's bio of John Lennon was a cause celebre for quite some time ("Was Lennon really such a cad?"). But the truth about Albert Goldman himself was that is HIS OWN LIFE he was miserable and unloved, a pox on humanity basically. That's according to a friend who knows the family (so you just KNOW it's true....). What that says to me is that in most cases, when it's all said and done, you get the life you deserve. You live the life you've earned.

Beauty and Bullies.
They go hand in hand. When young people get special treatment because they look pretty or attractive (esp. from certain members of Congress, but I digress, though the example fits.), it can only warp their sense of entitlement. "I deserve this because". Because why? "Just because".
But just you wait. They will, quite a few anyway, marry badly, have kids that they despise and that despise them, get stuck in miserable careers, and complain about how they deserve better. Maybe the surface will look good: nice house, two foreign cars, whatever. But it's the day to day happiness that is all that matters in life. Not what school your firstborn graduates from or how much money you make.
-----------------------------------------
So how is your day to day happiness lately......?
One more thing: this ain't u--y.
